Personal reflections on the past, the present and the future of crystallography on the occasion of the 125-year anniversary of Zeitschrift fur Kristallographie
Nowadays there is a wide field of materials whose structure have been investigated: from minerals, metals, alloys, inorganics to organics, organometallics, proteins and nucleic acids. The majority of them are crystalline, but many are ordered only along specific direction, or even amorphous. Nevertheless, all materials have a structure characterized by the ordering of atoms: in solid amorphous materials this is a short-range order, in crystalline materials a long-range order. Crystallographers are examining the order in materials, but also the disorder. Crystallography investigates structures on a wide scale.
