Explosive spalling of concrete elements in fire – a review
: If reinforced concrete elements are exposed to high fire temperatures, explosive spalling of the protective layer (but also of the deeper layers) of concrete element can occur. The occurrence of an explosive spalling is influenced by various factors of which the most significant being a low permeability, low porosity and high moisture content in concrete. Although this phenomenon can occur in all types of concrete, it is more common in self-compacting and high performance concrete, because of their dense microstructure of low porosity. Furthermore, reinforced concrete elements situated in the environment with high humidity, especially reinforced concrete tunnel linings have high risk of occurrence of explosive spalling. The paper gives the overview of up-to-date research on the occurrence of explosive spalling in concrete elements, the causes and factors that influence that phenomenon as well as protection methods.
