COTTON CATIONIZED IN MERCERIZATION – MATERIAL OF ADDED VALUE OR BASE FOR WASTEWATERS TREATMENT
Cotton cationization during mercerization with an epihalohydrin results in cellulose material of improved properties. Significantly higher adsorption of anionic compounds implies possibility of environmental removal of anionic surfactants and dyestuffs from textile wastewaters. Therefore, the electrokinetic properties of cotton fibers were cationized during the mercerization with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl- trimethyl-ammonium chloride (CHPTAC) were investigated, followed by dyeing with Reactive Blue 285 in concentrations of 0.5, 1 and 3 % owf. The exhaustion of dyestuff on cotton fibers during dyeing and cleaning, bath was monitored in order to decide whether such cotton is material of added value or the base for waste water treatment. It has been found that it can be used in dyeing of dark shades because in low concentrations it gets completely exhausted, resulting in non-uniform coloration and for the wastewaters it proved to be very effective.
