Association of malocclusion with body image, self- esteem and quality of life
Aim: To investigate the relationship between malocclusion and body image, self-esteem and quality of life. Subjects and Methods: The sample was cross- sectional and included 172 dentulous subjects (60% females) aged 19-42 (median 21, interquartile range 19-22), students and employees of the School of Medicine, University of Rijeka. The severity of impairments in quality of life was evaluated in dimensions Dental Self-Confidence (DSC), Aesthetic Concern, Psychological Impact and Social Impact of the Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire. The frequency of impairments was evaluated by the Oral Health Impact Profile. Satisfaction with orofacial appearance was assessed by the Orofacial Esthetic Scale. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was used to measure self-esteem. Body image was assessed with one item, „The appearance of my teeth and smile is important for my body appearance“, evaluated on a 5 point Likert scale. Self-reported satisfaction with appearance of teeth and self- reported treatment need were evaluated. Degree of malocclusion was assessed with the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need – Dental Health Component (IOTN DHC). Results: Most subjects were classified as IOTN DHC 2 (N=74). Difference in DSC was observed between IOTN DHC categories 1, 2 and 3, 4 (p<0.001). Pearson correlations demonstrated low linear relation between IOTN DHC and DSC (r=-0.339 ; p<0.001), satisfaction with appearance of teeth (r=-0.297 ; p<0.001) and self-reported treatment need (r=0.273 ; p<0.001). No correlation of DHC with other variables was observed. Conclusion: It seems that the severity of malocclusion has weak relation to quality of life. No relation between body image and malocclusion severity was found.
