Melatonin-loaded chitosan/PluronicR F127 microspheres as in situ forming hydrogel: an innovative approach toward improved wound healing

Melatonin-loaded chitosan-based microspheres as dry powder formulation suitable for wound dressing were developed based on factorial design. Chitosan and chitosan/F127 melatonin- loaded microspheres (MC and MCF, respectively) with very high encapsulation efficiency, small diameter, highly positive surface charge and low moisture content were identified. Microspheres were characterized by good flowability and high rate and extent of fluid uptake. Entrapment of melatonin in chitosan/F127 microspheres potentiated chitosan antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity.
