Challenges of using humanoid robots in the assessment of autism spectrum disorder
The diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is currently still based solely on behavioral observation made by (experienced) clinicians. Specific behaviors that are included in the diagnostic frameworks and the cut-off at which individual differences in behavior constitute clinically relevant abnormalities are based on subjective, arbitrary decision. modern robotics technologies, driven by new sensing capabilities that can outperform human senses, more and more sophisticated actuators, and ever increasing processing power, have the potential to provide the needed qualitative improvements in multimodal information gathering and social behavior coding.
