Modified Cotton for Better Flame Retardancy
Cotton materials represent a major risk in the case of fire as burning strong and fast. Especially for using in protection cloths it is necessary to make cotton fabrics flame retardant. For the purpose of enhancing efficiency and durability, in the present paper cotton fabrics were firstly modified by the mercerization and cationization. The cationization was performed during the mercerization process. These treatments were followed by flame retardant finishing in the conventional baths containing urea, ammonium hydrogen phosphate and water glass, as additive. Burning behavior of treated and three cycles washed cotton fabrics has been studied through Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI). For better understanding the thermal behaviour of treated cotton fabrics, thermogravimetric analyse (TGA) and micro combustion calorimetry (MCC) results are discussed.
