Cell-mediated immune response in the gut of weaned pigs vaccinated with a live attenuated oral vaccine against colibacillosis
Non-enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (non-ETEC) strain expressing F4ac fimbriae has been suggested to possess capability of stimulation of cell-mediated immune responses in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) of weaned pigs. However, the quantification of CD25, SWC7, and SWC9 antigens expressed by jejunal lamina propria (JLP) T and B cells, as well as macrophages, respectively, has not been evaluated in weaned pigs vaccinated against colibacillosis. In the present study we have used flow cytometry (FCM) to analyze CD25, SWC7, and SWC9 activation antigens expression on the surfaces of isolated JLP leukocytes as a marker of cell-mediated immunity in weaned pigs (N = 5) experimentally vaccinated with a live attenuated oral vaccine against porcine post-weaning colibacillosis (PWC). Non-vaccinated weaned pigs infected with ETEC (N = 5) served as control. Our results have showed that the vaccinal E. coli strain preferentially stimulates activation of SWC7+ B cells, rather than CD25+ T cells or SWC9+ macrophages, in the gut JLP of ETEC-infected weaned pigs.
