Nitriding the surface of nickel-titanium orthodontic wires improves corrosion stability

Aim was to evaluate the effect of nitriding the surface on the corrosion stability of nickel-titanium orthodontic wires. The properties of the nickel -titanium wire dimension 0.020x0.020“, uncoated and nitrided surface, was studied in artificial saliva and antiseptics based on hyaluronic acid (Gengigel) and chlorhexidine (CuraseptH ) pH 4.8 and 37±1°C. Corrosion stability is determined by electrochemical method of Tafel extrapolation (current density, corrosion potential, repassivation and brakedown potential). In the interaction with artificial saliva nitrided wire shows decreased current density and lower corrosion potential than the uncoated wire. Resistace to general corrosion is higher in nitrided than in uncoated wires. There is no pitting corrosion tendency for both wires in artificial saliva. Solution with Gengigel induced the least corrosin rate in uncoated wires and with Curasept the highest. Potential of repassivation and failure are the lowest in Gengigel, indicating a lower probability of pitting corrosion. The lowest corrosion rate and decreased resistance to localized corrosion were observed in Gengigel in nitrided wires. Slightly higher corrosion rate but no acceleration of localized corrosion were detected in Curasept. Nitriding the surface of wires increases resistance to corrosion. Gengigel is the optimal media for use with uncoated and Curasept with nitrided wire.
