PCA of Heritability Estimates for 50 Biometric Traits in Six Isolated Populations from Eastern Adriatic, Croatia
Isolated, particularly island populations have been intensively exploited as one of the most promising study designs for genetic inquiry because of the expected reduction in the number of potential genes having a pronounced role in the determination of complex traits. The populations inhabiting Middle Dalmatia islands are relatively isolated and inbred populations sharing a fairly homogenous environment (climate, nutrition, lifestyle, etc.) which makes them suitable targets for genetic investigations. They have been thoroughly investigated in the last 30 years by the research team of the Institute of Anthropological Research, Croatia, applying a holistic anthropological approach. Extensive data sets have been gathered from randomly sampled inhabitants of the islands of Brač, Hvar, Korčula and Vis, as well as the Pelješac peninsula and four nearby coastal villages encompassing 5-10% of their total populations. We are presenting here a study that explores the heritability estimates of 50 biometric traits calculated on a sub-sample consisting of parent-offspring data. In addition to this, the differences between six neighboring populations in the structure of their heritability estimates are examined with an assumption that it reflects genetic differences caused by founder effect and random genetic drift. A novel approach – principal component analysis (PCA) of heritability estimates - was employed with the basic aim of identifying a potentially promising population for further genetic investigation of complex traits including late-onset complex diseases and biological risk factors for their occurrence.
