Corrosion behaviour of CuAlNi shape memory alloy in NaCl solution after quenching at 885 °C in water
The corrosion behavior in 0.9 % NaCl solution (pH = 3.4-7.4) at 37°C of CuAlNi shape memory alloy (SMA) after quenching in water were studied by means of open circuit potential (EOC) measurements, linear and potentiodynamic polarizations measurements. The investigations were performed on samples after quenching at 885 °C (in duration of 60 minutes) in water. The results showed that lowering the pH of the solution leads to a decrease in the value of polarization resistance, and increase the value of corrosion current density. Scanning electron microscopy investigations revealed deposits of corrosion products on the surface in the form of spikes. The EDS analysis has showed that the surface contains the significant amount of oxygen and chloride compounds. Optical microscopy (OM) shows that after removing the surface layers of corrosion products, damages due to pitting corrosion were clearly visible on electrode surface.
