Frequency and Causes of Pleural Effusions Detected in Newly Diagnosed Pulmonary Patients
Pleural effusion is a common manifestation of various diseases. Some of them, like mesothelioma, almost always appear with pleural effusion. Generally, the main cause of pleural effusion is heart failure. However, within hospital population, at least 25 % of pleural effusions are caused by cancer. Malignant pleural effusions are most commonly caused by lung and breast cancer, than lymphomas, ovarian and stomach cancer. Except by lung cancer, pleural effusion in pulmonary patients is often caused by pneumonia, tuberculosis and pulmonary embolism. The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of pleural effusions in newly diagnosed pulmonary patients. In addition, we examined causes and clinical significance of pleural effusions, affected side and the need of additional diagnostic assessment.
