Heat Transport in Single Grain i-AlPdMn Quasicrystals

We present the results of measurements of the thermal conductivity on three single– grain specimens of icosahedral i– AlPdMn type quasicrystals. Theoret-ical calculations [P. A. Kalugin et al., Phys. Rev. B 53 (1996) 14 145] showed that the thermal conductivity in non periodic lattices should have a maximum at temperatures of the order of 10 K, while existing thermal conductivity data show both plateaus or shallow maxima in this temperature regime. Our new results on single grain samples exhibit well developed maxima, indicating this to be an intrinsic feature in the thermal conductivity of quasicrystals. Above 100 K, the thermal conductivity increases, again a common property of quasicrystals, and most likely due to the existence of localized vibrational states in quasiperiodic structures. In the low-temperature limit of our experi-ment (down to 0.3 K) we investigate the in uence of structure features typical for quasicrystals (such as phasons) to heat transport in quasiperiodic lattices.
