Here we present the application of mechanochemical reactions, [3] i.e. reactions between solid reactants induced by mechanical force, for a rapid, green and room-temperature transformation of environmentally safe metal precursors, oxides or hydroxides into most relevant microporous MOFs, notably those from MOF-74[4] or zirconium-based MOFs of UiO[5] family. We show here how the milling quantitatively produces MOFs in gram quantities by using only catalytic amount of ‘green solvents’, such as methanol or water, yielding microporous products with catalytic properties comparable to those from conventional solvothermal procedures.
