CROND, a new technlogy, in biotreatment of highly polluted wastewater from food industry

The study was aimed at investigating treatment of wastewater generated by the production of bakers yeast from the molasses and sugar beet. We used water that contained organic substances expressed as COD in the range of 7000-10000 mg/L, of which 50% was betaine-a sparingly biodegradable quarterly ammonium salt structured (CH3)3-N-R*. Wastewater was dark brown due to the presence of caramelized sugars and other organic substances. Its pH was 6.8-7.2. Complete removal of organic ingredients, nitrogen-containig substances and wastewater colourants was achieved by a two-step continuous process performed with mixed microbial cultures: a mixed bacterial culture (MBC) necessary for bio-oxidation and nitrification with pre-denitrifiaction, and with a mixed yeast culture (MYC) for the removal of wastewater colorants. MBC copmrised the selected bacterial strains (3 autotrophic and 3 heterotrophic bacteria) and MYC comprised two pseudomycelian yeasts. Under pre-selected environmental conditions (pH, temperature, the level of dissolved oxygen and a microbial biomass) we performed cuntinuous nitrification with pre-denitrifiaction using MBC as the 1st step of the process, and the efficient colour removal using MYC as the 2nd step of the process. Biodegradation and nitrification with pre-denitrifiaction (process step 1) were based on cometabolic principles of the mixed bacterial culture. Removal of wastewater colourants (process step 2) was based on the activity of yeast enzymes, type phenoloxidase-laccase and peroxidase. We used the results to develop CROND (complete removal of organic and nitrogen compounds and decolorisation), a new technology for treatment of highly polluted wastewater from food industry. CROND can replace ANAMET (anaerobic-aerobic) process currently employed in the treatment of wastewater generated by yeast production that actually, removes only organic substances (COD and BOD5).
