Reinterpreting (national) intangible heritage: How do we present ourselves?

After a long process of negotiation Croatia has become a member state of the European Union at the July 1, 2013. On that occasion, there was a huge project of public ceremony, multimedial bricolage organized at the main square in Zagreb, our capital. Artistic director of the broadcasted program was young and respectful theater director. She primarily imagined and compiled program “for domestic audience and than for the Others”. Following the order by the Croatian Government she found intangible cultural heritage as the salutary backbone for the program. A year earlier, our younger colleague ethnologist and choreologist was invited to be a co- author of the scenario for the main celebration of the Statehood Day in Slovenia. He advocated for public emancipation of the “folklore activities”. According to these and some other examples we can ask ourselves: How do we present ourselves nowadays? Are we now in the new age of nationalisation, rebuilding or reinterpreting our national identities and states in the European Union? How dance and music as cultural heritage can be used in construction of local and national identities and, at the same time, serve as the best way for promotion of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue?
