Erased: On the Circularity of Misogyny on the Example of Female Representation in the Public Space of Zagreb
The articles gives an overview of the models of representation of women through the public and memorial sculpture in the city of Zagreb, with the focus on the analysis of perpetuating patterns of objectivisation of the female body, dominant in all historical periods as well as in the current production. The emphasis is given to the removal and destruction of a significant proportion of monuments dedicated to historical female figures associated with the narrative of the Peoples' Liberation Struggle during the World War II in Croatia, which occurred due to the radical shift of the dominant ideological framework and the restoration of capitalism in the 1990s. Based on the analysis of the temporary installations located on Zagreb's central square on the occasion of the 1st Congress of the Antifascist Front of Women of Croatia in summer of 1945, the author discusses the repercussion of the revolutionary events on the symbolic entrance of women into the public sphere by the introduction new patterns of female representation in urban space.
