Role of Petroleum in Energy Supply Today and Tomorrow

Crude oil has gradually, but substantually and fast pushed out coal from its use as the most important source of energy. The reason for that was a better utilisation of oil products in recently engines and its preference in environment protection. Natural gas has even better advantages in environment protection. Discovery and development of giant gas reservoirs have contributed that oil and natural gas together have taken the leading place between recently spent energy sources. In spite of drilling oil and gas wells in deeper and deeper ocean and real expectation of extistence of new reservoirs below the deep offshore, proven and prospective reserves of natural gas (and oil) are smaller than the expected needs of the mankind are. There exist a few ways to overcome insufficience of energy. Between the others that are: - improvement of combustion processes in engines; - rational application of hydroenergy potentials; - economical ways of hydrocarbon extraction from oil slate, oil impregnated sand, sedimenthed asphalt and/or similar deposits; - bringing to exploitation gas hydrates which are found in low temperature circumstances at the bottom of deep ocean and in ocean rims; - economical production of hydrogen and development of production and application of combustion cells; - rational application of geothermal energy; - ecologically safe production and application of nuclear energy; - economical application of alternative fuels produced by energy of sun rays, waves, wind, biomasses, etc. Whichever of these sources, or any other which may be developed by the intuitive mind of the mankind does not exclude the application of any of these or others if they satisfy criteria of ecology, safety and economy.
