ULTRASOUND ASSISTED EXTRACTION OF PHENOLICS FROM HAWTHORN FLOWERS AND LEAFS MIXTURE
An ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE) has several advantages in comparison to conventional extraction e.g. reduced extraction time, extraction temperature, and solvent consumption, increased extraction yield, and enhanced quality of extracts. Further, the yield of extracted phenolic compounds depends on: solvent used, extraction time and temperature, amplitude, ultrasound power, cycle, diameter of the probe etc. In this study the effects of the extraction parameters: type of solvent (methanol, ethanol), solvents polarity (50 and 70% aqueous solution of alcohol), probe diameter of ultrasonic devices (7mm), amplitude (50, 75, and 100 %) and extraction time (3, 6, and 9 minutes) on the yield of phenolic compounds from mixture of hawthorn flowers and leafs were investigated. In obtained extracts the mass fraction of total phenolic compounds were determined spectrophotometrically by Folin-Ciocalteu method. On the basis of obtained results and conducted statistical analysis (p<0.05) it was shown that all researched extraction parameters significantly affected the yield of hawthorn polyphenols. In the most samples, ethanol was shown as more efficient solvent than methanol. Furthermore, extraction capacity of phenolic compounds increased with utilization 70 % ethanol as extraction solvent and by using higher amplitude. There is no uniform pattern of time influence on yield of total phenolic compounds. The highest value of mass fraction was obtained by 70 % ethanol (95.66 mg g-1), amplitude 100 %, and during 6 minutes. Obtained results suggested that ultrasound assisted extraction could be an efficient technique for the extraction of hawthorn phenolic.
