Relation between secondary education and academic performance in the first year of undergraduate physiotherapy course

Relevance: In Croatia the education system provides training for physiotherapists in the secondary and tertiary levels. The assumption underlying this research is that the success of students during their first year at undergraduate physiotherapy course is determined by their secondary school curricula. Purpose: The aim of the research is to investigate the impact of secondary education on the successful academic performance in Clinical kinesiology module which covers basic knowledge and skills important for further study. The sample consists of 210 first-year students at undergraduate physiotherapy course enrolled in the academic year 2014/2015 and divided into four groups (G1, G2, G3, G4) with different secondary education background. G1 consists of students who completed secondary school for physiotherapists (N=55), G2 consists of students who finished grammar school (N=94), G3 of students from the secondary school for nurses (N=16) and G4 with students from other secondary schools (N=45). The hypothesis is that education in physiotherapy at secondary school level does not significantly influence the performance of first-year university students in the Clinical kinesiology module. Methods/Analysis: The intention is to investigate the correlation between the results achieved during the first year of studies and the type of secondary education by analysing the Clinical kinesiology preliminary and final exam results (taken at the end of the first semester and at the end of the first academic year respectively). The students´ success was evaluated using grades from 1 to 5, and the results were analysed using the ANOVA. Results: The results of the preliminary exam suggest no significant difference between the groups (F=2.35 ; p=0.07), although there is a tendency for G1 and G3 students to achieve better results. The analysis of the final exam results showed a significant difference between the groups G1, G2 and G4 (F=5.15 ; p=0.0019), with the group G2 having achieved better results. G3 results did not differ from other groups due to large variability in their results. Discussion and conclusions: The teachers´ experience in the Clinical kinesiology module is that students without prior knowledge in physiotherapy and biomedicine have difficulties with content acquisition and understanding professional terminology. Taking into account the obstacles the students encounter in the first semester of their university course, it is assumed that such students have higher motivation for improving their knowledge, and that they also achieve greater continuity of learning. Analysis of the preliminary exam results indicates that prior knowledge in physiotherapy and biomedicine does lead to better results (G1 and G3), although they are not statistically significant. The results of the final exam show that grammar school students (G2) show better knowledge acquisition. The research results support the hypothesis that secondary education in physiotherapy does not significantly influence the performance of first-year university students in the Clinical kinesiology module. This study assumes that work habits are fundamental to the success of students in their first year, as well as throughout the study, which is a prospective objective of another research. Impact and Implications: Results point to the possibility of improving the teaching process through solving problems caused by the differences in secondary school curricula.
