Inside L2 Reading: Special Focus on Young Learners
The chapter presents the construct of reading from three main perspectives, such as bottom-up (the knowledge of graphophonic and syntactic cues should be first acquired), top-down (reading begins with knowledge of semantics and discourse organisation), and interactive (bottom-up and top- down processes work together in reading). It also discusses the crucial similarities and differences between reading in the first language and reading in the second language, centred on the issue of transferability. Special attention is paid to the comprehension of reading as a problem-solving activity including processing at two levels. The insights provided in the first part of the chapter should help us determine the scope of reading ability that is relevant for young learners, particularly those learning a non-native language.
