CROATIAN TOURISM TRENDS IN THE EUROPEAN UNION AND DEVELOPMENT GUIDELINES

International tourism is strongly influenced by the global economic crisis. The crisis of banking and finance, which began in summer 2007 as the consequence has caused a crisis in the global economy and in all its sectors, which further resulted in reducing the number of international travel, was motivated by business or vacation. Trends in global tourism scene reflect in the tourist industry in Croatia and the European Union. Decrease in the number of international tourist arrivals in many countries of the European Union compensates the increased incentives for the development of domestic tourism. Croatia is highly dependent on international tourism (more than 85% of foreign tourist arrivals), while domestic tourism records a negative trend. Hoteliers seek to reduce prices to keep the level of occupancy rates. There is a growing demand for budget hotels. The interest of low-cost airline for Croatia reduces the negative results of Croatian tourism. Dynamic processes in the international tourism are inevitable challenge of Croatian tourism, not only as a component of European and world tourism, but also as a crucial factor in its development. This paper examines the state of the Croatian tourism analyzing quantitative (tourist arrivals and overnight stays, tourism revenues) and qualitative indicators and position of the Croatian tourism in the European Union. Based on the survey results provide guidance for Croatian tourism development taking into account the fact that Croatia 1 July 2013 is becoming a full member of the European Union and that it opens up a market of 500 million people.
