Some Experiences of Risk Assessment, Surveillance System and Data Collection in the Republic of Croatia – Classical Swine Fever
Risk analysis is an important tool for assisting the veterinary service in decision making and setting of priorities. According to the recommendations of the World Organization for Animal Health (OlE), risk analysis is done in all cases when public or animal health is at risk and has an important role in decision making and implementation of measures. In Croatia, animal health risk assessment has been used more frequently and intensively since 2005, when veterinary epidemiology was introduced in the curriculum of veterinary medicine study and the Department of Veterinary Economics and Epidemiology was established. One of the goals of the Department is to conduct risk assessment studies in cooperation with the Veterinary Authority for animal diseases surveillance, control and prevalence. Thus, a qualitative risk assessment of the introduction of avian influenza virus (Al)to Croatia through wild birds has been done. Furthermore, some epidemiological aspects of the occurrence of the classical swine fever (CSF) in 2006 - 2008 and the risk factors such as swill feeding and extensive farming have been analyzed. On the basis of recent experiences with Al and CSF, surveillance system and data collection have been improved and a new CSF Surveillance Programme in domestic pigs and wild boars as well as the Ordinance on measures to prevent the occurrence and spread of CSF were introduced and implemented in 2012 and 2013. This paper presents some results of risk assessment and discusses the CSF surveillance system as the basis for risk assessment.
