Event Related Brain Responses to Statistical Manipulations: An Experimental Investigation of Verbal Learning in Dyslexia

The aim of this research is to examine the neuropsychological correlates of processing events with different phonotactic probabilities in adults with dyslexia in Croatian language within phonological theory of dyslexia where dyslexia is explained as difficulty in sublexical level of phonological processing of language. On the lexical level words are represented as strings of phonemes that differ according to the frequency of occurrence within syllables or words in a given language. These distributional frequencies are typically referred to as phonotactic probabilities and acquisition of these regularities is achieved through their structured presentation. This form of learning is called statistical learning. Research has shown that dyslexia is characterized by phonological deficits that affect language learning and processing. This research will use the statistical learning paradigm to examine the influence of phonotactic probability on language processing and learning in people with dyslexia comparing to nondyslexic individuals
