A New Statistical Concept of Tool Life Modeling
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has standardized the tool life testing with single-point turning tools (ISO 3685) in 1977, and a Revised Version of ISO 3685 appeared in 1993. However, this standard cannot hold anymore from the view of the advanced manufacturing systems and technology. After a discussion of its weaknesses, a new statistical concept of tool life modeling is proposed in this paper. The concept is based on the idea to exploit all the data collected along the tool life testing, linking the flank wear progression to the logarithms both of the cutting time and of the cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed and depth of cut), and bearing in mind the reliability level of cutting tool. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the proposed concept.
