Contribution of cereals and other food groups to dietary fiber intake
The aim of present work was to estimate the daily dietary intake of fibre in a population sample from eastern Croatia, and also to determine the contribution of individual food groups to the intake. Forty six volunteers (22-52 yr old ; 29 women and 17 men) weighed and recorded all consumed food over a 7-day period in August and September 1999. The intakes of soluble, nonsoluble and total fibre were calculated from the collected data using a computer programme. At the same time, the intake of fibre was analyzed according to their food origin. The fibre intake in this population sample was 21. 0 g/day (23.9 g/day for men ; 19.3 g/day for women), and was found to be satisfactory considering the recommendations, although a higher intake would be desirable. Soluble fibre made around 36% of total fibre intake. Cereals contributed the most to the dietary fibre intake (45.6%), similarly to data from other countries. A relatively high contribution of vegetables including leguminoses (32.9%), and fruits (20.0%) could be ascribed to the investigation period.
