Influences of genotype and soil properties on corn potassium and magnesium status

Some soils in Croatia are inadequate nutritional status (for example, K deficiency and oversupply of Mg, P deficiency etc) for achievent of high and stabile yields of field crops including corn as the first-ranged on our arable lands. Aim of this study was testing ten corn hybrids on two soils of moderate fertility (the growing season 1998: the soil A1 = Zupanja calcaric fluvisol ; the soil A2 = Luzani stagnosol) because choice of more tolerant genotype is important factor for corn yield under less favorable soil conditions. The soil A1 is deficient in K and rich in Mg, while the soil A2 is low in P. In general, low and similar grain yields of corn were found in both trials (means 6.31 and 6.07 t ha-1, for the A1 and A2 soil, respectively). Differences of yields among the hybrids were from 4.09 (OsSK552) to 9.15 (OsSK568exp.) t ha-1 and they were very significant. For example, five hybrids yielded under 6.0 t/ha (the group B1: mean 4.97 t ha-1), while remaining five hybrids had considerably higher yields (the group B2: mean 7.41 t ha-1). Differences of K and Mg status (ear-leaf at silking stage) among the hybrids were from 0.85% to 1.04% K and from 0.76 to 1.12% Mg. In general, in the B1 group were found less favorable nutritional status compared to B2 group (0.90% and 0.97% K, 0.98% and 0.85% Mg, for the B1 and B2, respectively). Acute K deficiency (mean 0.64 % K) and oversupply of Mg (mean 1.23% Mg) were found in the A1 experiment, while on A2 corn status was more favorable (1.27% K and 0.55 % Mg, respectively). In general, differences of yields of individual corn hybrids between two tested soils are low, but among the hybrids there were found significant differences. Also, considerable differences of yields and ear-leaf K and Mg status were found among the hybrids and between two tested soils. We presume that corn hybrids characterizing higher K and lower Mg uptake could be better choice for K- deficient soils.
