Efficiency Analysis of Renewable Energy and Fuel Cell System for Stand-Alone House in Mediterranean Area
Analyzed system that combines heat and power (CHP) for stand-alone house in the Mediterranean area allows independent functionality and is entirely environmentally friendly. The model of the cogeneration system consists of photovoltaic panels, wind turbine, battery and fuel cell, and is simulated for several cases. The system operates on energy from renewable sources, wind and sun, and the hydrogen is obtained from an electrolyzer or a storage tank. Techno-economic analysis of a cogeneration system with its own hydrogen production has been compared with a cogeneration system using externally supplied hydrogen. Although results show that the system which includes electrolyzer has longer return on investment (ROI), it is obvious that it has advantage while operating in isolated area. On the other hand, in resorts that have developed electrical and land gas pipe network, hydrogen from reformer is more convenient and economically has better ROI. With that been said, the results of the simulation show that the appropriate energy production system for standalone houses in Mediterranean area should rely on externally supplied hydrogen.
