CH Cyg: The TiO molecule as a probe for the time evolution of physical parameters in the photosphere of the cool component

The TiO molecular bands represent an outstanding feature in the optical spectrum of the cool component of the symbiotic star CH Cygni. They can be studied in the quiescent phases, when they are in the whole visible wavelength range completely free of veiling by the hot blue continuum and the spectrum appears typical of an M6-7III star.In order to test the possible signs of the symbiotic phenomenon in quiescence we studied the variation of physical conditions in the red giant's photosphere in a two year period from 1987-1989. In the region 4400-6900A 34 TiO bands have been identified and their relative intensities measured. The bands belong to the alpha and gamma system of the TiO molecule and are a result of rotational vibrational transitions between states with vibrational numbers v' and v'' ranging from 0 to 10.The remarkably large scattering of intensity jumps of absorption bands in CH Cygni with respect to 30 Her has been assigned to its pronounced intrinsic variability, the effect of truncation of continuum by strong atomic and molecular absorption being essentially the same in both stars. Under the assumption that the TiO molecules conform to Boltzman distribution with respect to the vibrational levels, we determined the vibrational temperature for different epochs by comparing the intensities of the vibrational bands belonging to the same electronic system. A correlation with excitation temperature of neutral metals in the red giant's atmosphere regarding size and time behaviour compared with 30 Her as standard star has been established.
