Physical activity in therapy for metabolic syndrome

In metabolic syndrome, an entity without uniform diagnostic criteria, a combination of obesity, arterial hypertension, insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, and dyslipidemia entails an increased cardiovascular risk in 25% to 35% of the developed world population. A beneficial effect of regular physical activity has been demonstrated for metabolic disturbances that are characteristic of the syndrome. An optimal physical exercise program for patients with metabolic syndrome includes a combination of aerobic endurance training and resistance training. Moderate intensity high-volume training appears to be useful and safe. Physical activity of patients with metabolic syndrome should be incorporated in and tailored according to the patient's needs, goals and initial abilities ; it should be enjoyable, affordable and accessible. It is important to initiate physical activity in young individuals, to enhance the level of routine activities of daily living in order to increase energy utilization in combination with appropriate dietary and other healthy habits. To our knowledge, there have not yet been any controlled studies of physical activity programs in patients with diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome.
