Numerical simulations of ship resistance in model ice

Ships operating in the Baltic Sea in the winter season have to be ice strengthened to withstand ice loads. These loads can be a result of the ship operating in level ice or in a channel in dynamic ice, which can induce compressive loads to the side of the ship if the channel is closing up. The latter influence the re-sistance of the ship and may result in structural damage or zero forward speed if the compressive loads are higher than the structural capacity or propulsion capabilities. Within SAFEWIN project we carried out model scale tests of a ship in level and compressive ice utilizing the premises of Aalto University in Espoo, Finland. These tests are costly and variations in tests parameters are limited. Hence, in this paper, we seek to simulate these experiments with the nonlinear finite element method and thereby to identify the feasibility to perform such simulations. To conclude the latter, the simulation results are compared to the experimental findings by means of measured resistance, respectively force.
