Time variable gravity field and mass changes
In this thesis, temporal variations of the gravity field have been observed and processed in order to recover mass changes. It summarizes the general approach of mass change recovery using Gravity Recovery and Climate Change Experiment (GRACE) mission. Greenland, Antarctica and the Amazon basin were chosen as the areas of interest. After performing signal to noise analysis of several GRACE models’ time series, a suitable model was selected for further steps in mass change analysis. Since GRACE data are submit to errors which are manifested in the spatial domain as stripes in the north-south direction, filtering techniques had to be used. Two filter approaches were applied and compared, Gaussian filter and a Swenson-Wahr filter. Integration kernels have been applied due to the nature of GRACE mission concerning leakage, simple 0/1 weighting and a more sophisticated approach with a Gaussian smoothing function. The linear trend of mass change was corrected with three different Glacial Isostatic Adjustment models and compared. The final results show mass trend in the three areas of interest.
