Karstic salt wedge estuaries – an ideal environment for phytoplankton life strategies and species ecology testing

River Krka is karstic river situated in the central part of the eastern Adriatic coast. The geomorphology and hydrology of the Krka River enables expansion of freshwater phytoplankton which develops in the Lake Visovac. The river inflows in the Adriatic Sea forming salt wedge estuary including expansion Lake Prokljan. Cyclotella species belong to codon B, Reynolds FG, and have a wide tolerance to various environmental parameters, allowing them to dominate in mesotrophic systems. Therefore, it provides great potential for quality assessments. The phylogenetic analyses of the Cyclotella showed it can be split into several genera and C. ocellata to be assigned as type species of a new diatom genus, Pantocsekiella. Species Pantocsekiella ocellata is a variable species in terms of its morphology and ecology, therefore a number of studies have been performed to delineate its phenotypic plasticity. P. ocellata is considered as a species complex together with C. krammeri, P. rossii, P. tripartita, C. kuetzingiana, P. polymorpha and P. comensis. It is the main descriptor of the diatom community in Lake Visovac, with accompanying P. polymorpha and Discostella pseudostelligera. In Lake Visovac P. ocellata reached the highest abundances in July and August (2 x 106 cells L-1). In the estuary, in Lake Prokljan P. ocellata was found also dominating the halocline and brackish layer reaching abundances up to 7, 4 x 105 cells L-1 (reaching up to 98% of the total diatom community). The salinity stress experiment showed that 42% of P. ocellata cells survive higher salinities after 12h of exposure.
