Influence of The As-Cast Microstructure Characteristics on Impact Toughness of Ductile Cast Iron Grade EN-GJS-400-18-LT
The effects of chemical composition (silicon content) and as-cast microstructure characteristics on impact toughness of ductile iron grade EN-GJS-400-18-LT were studied. The presence of manganese and other pearlite forming elements and the low nodule count prevented formation of a fully ferritic structure even at 3.2% silicon content. The relationship between the notched impact toughness at – 20 °C and silicon content indicated that the impact toughness values were below that prescribed by EN 1563. Optimal toughness at about 40 % pearlite in as-cast condition was result of higher content of pearlite stabilizing elements or low nodule count, as well as higher silicon addition, which reduces pearlite content but increase the ductile to brittle transition temperature – thereby producing the embritteling effect.
