EM Waves and the Human Eye

The objective of this thesis is to accurately calculate the EM fields in 3D model of the human eye. From these field values corresponding SAR and the thermal rise is calculated. An eye illuminated by EM plane wave is treated as EM scattering problem. Because of physical characteristics of the EM fields, hybrid BE-FE formulation is implemented with edge elements which are known to preserve the tangential continuity of vector fields. This formulation allows us to deal with inhomogeneities of the tissues while at the same time it allows us to treat EM scattering from an eye as unbounded problem. Because of the hyper singularities involved in surface integral formulation, double surface integral formulation is implemented. With BEM part of such formulations there is the problem that we can approach the observation point although we are not dealing strictly with self-integral. This situation leads to potentially inaccurate results which are exaggerated if the problem is electrically small. To circumvent such problems the novel adaptive technique of contour integration is developed which has been demonstrated to be fast, accurate and immune to the proximity of observation point. Furthermore, in order to develop such formulation an extensive work in supporting mathematical apparatus has been provided in the thesis. This technique has been particularly useful when dealing with electrically small problems such as human eye at frequency range 1GHz - 6GHz. Accurate results of EM scattering computation have been obtained and provided in the thesis.
