Qualitative Analysis of Diesel Spray Development for Different Modelling Approaches
In this research, the computational modelling of reactive turbulent spray processes occurring within the diesel engine combustion chamber is presented. The same engine configuration is modelled with two different spray approaches, namely the Euler-Lagrangian discrete particle approach and the Euler Eulerian size-of-classes approach. In both simulations, the combustion process is modelled through detailed chemical kinetics and by solving homogeneous gas phase reactions. The combustion model was previously implemented into a commercial computational fluid dynamics code and validated together with the used spray sub-models. The modelled results show a high level of similarity when using different spray approaches. The similarity is found in liquid and vapour fuel temporal and spatial distributions, as well as for the momentum transfer and combustion process. The given results show a good agreement, but a slight difference in the momentum transfer and combustion process timing is observed.
