CFD Analysis of Combustion Process in a Jet Engine Can Combustion Chamber

In this research the numerical simulation of combustion process in a can type combustion chamber with double stage radial swirler of a jet engine is presented. The commercial computational fluid dynamic software AVL FIRE™ was used for modelling of spray, combustion and emission processes. Initially, the mesh dependency tests were performed in order to choose the optimal solution between accuracy and time. The air stream with the constant mass flow and constant temperature is entrained in the combustion chamber through the radial swirler. The swirled stream is used to induce the vortices that are needed to mix and distribute the vaporised fuel through the chamber. The liquid fuel named Jet-A was used as a surrogate for the kerosene fuel. The k- zeta-f model and the Euler Lagrangian approach were employed to model the turbulence and spray development. The combustion process was described with the advanced ECFM-3Z combustion model, whilst the ignition was modelled with the Issim spark ignition model. Presented results, such as temperature, velocity and NOx distribution through the combustor are verified and a chemical and physical behaviour of simulation setup was achieved.
