Isolation of drug-resistant Listeria monocytogenes from meat processing plant

In this study the antimicrobial susceptibility of Listeria monocytogenes collected from meat processing plant (n=14) was evaluated by E- test. L. monocytogenes was detected in samples by reference ISO method, and then confirmed by Molecular Detection Assay. Minimal inhibitory concentrations of ampicillin, gentamicin, vancomycin, streptomycin, linezolid, azithromycin, rifampicin, oxacillin, trimethoprim/sulphametoxazole and ciprofloxacin were measured. All isolates were susceptible to clinically relevant antibiotics gentamicin, streptomycin, azithromycin, rifampicin, trimethoprim/sulphametoxazole and ciprofloxacin. Five isolates (35.71 %) of L. monocytogenes were resistant at least to one antimicrobial agent. Two isolates were resistant to vancomycin, three to linezolid and oxacillin, and one to all three agents. One isolate showed the resistance to vancomycin, linezolid and ampicillin. Also, in the case of resistant isolates, the high-level MIC of azithromycin-rifampicin, ampicillin- oxacillin and streptomycin-linezolid were recorded. Occurrence of multi-resistant L. monocytogenes strains in meat processing facility samples indicates the risk of antimicrobial resistance transfer along the food processing chain, primarily in ready-to-eat products.
