Investigation of Dual-fuel Combustion Properties for CFD Simulation Purposes

Recently, to decrease the harmful products from conventional diesel combustion in internal combustion engines and increase the overall air quality, an approach of adding an additional fuel to the engine has been introduced. This work focuses on improving the current state of combustion simulation by performing an investigation of specific combustion properties for a dual-fuel system. Current advanced combustion models use pre-tabulated data for single fuels in order to increase the efficiency of the calculation. Having a blend of fuel species increases the complexity of tabulation operation and also requires an additional input to the mathematical combustion model. In this work a diesel/natural gas combination will be investigated, with n-heptane representing diesel fuel and a combination of methane and propane representing natural gas. An investigation of the dual-fuel composition influence on the combustion properties such as ignition delay times and laminar flame speeds will be performed in order to determine the dependence of the properties on the blend factor. Finally, based on this research, a correlation function will be suggested to calculate the needed properties based on the already existing data, reducing the number of calculations needed in the tabulation stage but keeping sufficient accuracy of the final combustion simulation results.
