Influence of silicon on mechanical properties of low temperature impact resistant ductile cast iron
The effects of chemical composition (silicon content) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of low temperature impact resistant ductile cast iron grade EN-GJS-400-18-LT in as-cast condition were studied. The investigation was performed on the shop floor in real working conditions. The presence of manganese and other pearlite forming elements, and low nodule count prevented the formation of a fully ferritic structure even with silicon content as high as 3.2%. Increase in silicon content reduced hardness and strength. The relationship between the notched impact toughness at –20 °C and silicon content indicated that the impact toughness values were below that prescribed by EN 1563-GJS-400-18-LT. Low impact values were constant up to 2.6% silicon. With increased silicon content, impact toughness greatly decreased due to the embrittling effect of silicon.
