Industry 4.0 and Additive Manufacturing

Modern demands on the market are putting more and more constraints on product development and production. Besides request for increasing product quality and flexibility level in product development and production, at the same time demands on costs and especially development and production time reduction are imposed. Additional trend, as a part of megatrends which are associated with development of human population in global terms, and which is more visible in certain market segments, is abandoning mass production in favour of small series or even single (personalized) production which leads toward changing of production paradigm to produce specific necessary product, just in the moment when it is necessary, and all in the frame of the new industrial revolution, Industry 4.0, which is in impetus, in order to be able to satisfy such market demands. Since second half of 1980’s, modern additive manufacturing processes are permanently being developed. Main characteristic of these processes is adding the material, mostly layer-by-layer, until the whole product is finished, based only on 3D CAD model of product, without need for additional tools. Such principle enables the production of products with very complicated geometries, which would be very difficult or even impossible to produce with traditional production procedures. Work describes the basic principles of additive manufacturing technologies, their meaning in modern approaches to product development and production and predictions of their future developments.
