The sense of coherence in slovenian and croatian adults

The aim of this article is to explore the sense of coherence in Slovenian and Croatian adults with regard to gender, occupation, employment, education and family status. The construct of the sense of coherence (SOC) was developed by A. Antonovsky during the 1970’ s. The author was focused on identifying the general resources that individuals use to manage the tension associated with stressors. These generalized resistance resources facilitate positive adjustment to the tension associated with a variety of life situations. The construct of SOC is then defined as a global orientation, the extent to which a person has an enduring and dynamic feeling of confidence that one's internal and external stimuli are predictable and explicable (comprehensibility), that resources are available to meet the demands posed by the stimuli (manageability), and that these demands are challenges worthy of investment and engagement (meaningfulness). Antonovsky (1993) affirms that a construct is universally meaningful and cuts across lines of gender, social class, region and culture. The research included 927 persons of both sexes, 21 to 70 years old ; 546 of them were from Slovenia and 381 from Croatia. In the study we used the shortened version of the SOC scale (23 items), a set of demographic questions, and questions about the perception of life goals and the ratings of their importance. The results which show that there exist some differences on measured variables between the two countries, will be presented.
