Identification of geomorphological units and hazardous processes in the Vinodol Valley

This paper presents results of identification of geomorphological units characterized by specific surface phenomena which are results of hazardous processes. Study area encompasses the area of the Vinodol Valley divided into three main parts: northwestern part, central part and southeastern part. On the basis of the visual interpretation of the imagery derived from the high-resolution airborne LiDAR DEM, the following analyses have been performed: identification of morphological features of the Vinodol Valley, basic morphometric analysis, and identification of morphological features which are characteristic for particular type of hazardous phenomena. Field investigations were additionally conducted to identify the types of superficial material and bedrock, and to perform field checking of the uncertainly interpreted phenomena. In the northwestern part of the Vinodol Valley five geomorphological units were identified, with further subdivision of one geomorphological unit into three geomorphological units of the lower order. In the central and southeastern parts of the Vinodol Valley, totally eight geomorphological units were identified. For the area of the NW part of the Vinodol Valley, geomorphological map was created. In this paper, the classification of hazardous processes has been performed on the basis of the Varnes classification of landslides modified by Hungr et al., (2014). Identified hazardous processes and resulting specific phenomena are listed and presented for each geomorphological unit in all three main parts of the Vinodol Valley.
