Ion tracks on MgO, MgAl2O4 andAl2O3 surfaces
Passage of the swift heavy ion through the material can form permanent damage along its trajectory (i.e. ion track). On the surface, nanostructures can be found on the place of the ion impact by means of atomic force microscopy. Some materials like MgO, MgAl2O4 and Al2O3 are known to be resistant to ion track formation very much. For this reason, threshold for nanostructure formation on their surfaces is very high, around 10-15 keV/nm [1]. In the present contribution we present new experimental results showing that ion track formation on these materials surfaces can be produced already at 8 keV/nm if the grazing incidence irradiation geometry is applied. Detailed investigations also show that in case of MgO, surface ion tracks have rift-like morphology, while ion tracks on MgAl2O4 and Al2O3 surfaces have familiar hillock-like structure. In addition, in situ ERDA measurements are used to monitor stoichiometry of the surfaces during ion irradiation. [1] V.A. Skuratov, A.E. Efimov, K. Havancsak, Nucl. Instr. Meth. B 250 (2006) 245
