Martin Scorsese's Gangster Films
This paper deals with the gangster trilogy of Martin Scorsese analysed through some of its prominent motifs. It shows Martin Scorsese’s development in the gangster film genre as a director inspired by classic Hollywood cinema, but also as an auteur whose films are unique works of art. Violence, religion and unconventional characters are surely the biggest trademarks of Scorsese’s style, integrated into films with the help of some innovative filmmaking techniques taken from the French New Wave, and some that he came up with himself. Recognition from both the audience and experts enabled him to achieve the status of an icon of modern Hollywood cinema.
