The Film Comedy
The paper describes how the comedy has developed through years and that every period was different and had its own characteristics. What is common in all of these films is the humor which is the basic element of the comedy films, as the name of the genre tells us itself. The humor has developed through the years, as well as narrative. The first type of humor was physical in silent era and then it expanded on the dialogues. In the analyses we can see that the physical humor is always present in comedies and it is one of the most important and well-known types of humor. Further on, we have the humor produced by the dialogues ; this comes to importance only in the last film. And the gross-out humor which is of much relevance also in the last film, that is, from the 1980s until the present day. The narrative became more complex through the years and an essential part of the films. The most used type of narrative is the chronological one because of its simplicity. Most of the characteristics of humor and narrative depend on the period when they were produced. The relationship between narrative and gag is a dynamic process, sometimes gags are incorporated in narrative, and other times gags become absorbed into the narrative. What is considered to be the most important characteristic is that the gags and the humor in films have much more importance than the narrative and to make narrative more important results in a film that is not humorous.
