Films of Billy Wilder
The aim of the paper is to analyse the work of the famous writer and producer Billy Wilder, but it was also presented how his life, especially its early stages, influenced his creative and fruitful later work. This aspect was analysed in the first chapter where Wilder’s first steps from Vienna to Hollywood were described. Wilder’s obsession with deception is also described in a separate part of the first chapter and it is discovered how it might have been wired in his brain ever since his childhood when he kept his father’s secret about having another son. The following chapters are dedicated to three famous Wilder’s films: Double Indemnity (1944), The Seven Year Itch (1955) and Some Like it Hot (1959). The first one was later on described and celebrated as one of the first films of the film noir category. It had all that was necessary for the film of that genre – the crime, setting and the characters. Attention is also paid to the position of the subordinate female who, as it was later shown, reappears in the analysis of all three of Wilder’s films. Both The Seven Year Itch and Some Like it Hot featured strong objectification of women – in The Seven Year Itch all female characters are only paid attention to in terms of their youth and beauty while in Some Like it Hot the analysis went deeper and offered the possibility of the female emphasising her status as an object of beauty and therefore seeking the attention.
