Mechanosynthesis of 4, 4'-bis(N, N-dimethylamino)-azobenzene and its dicyclopalladated complex

During the last decades mechanochemical reactions have been established as a viable green-chemistry alternative to conventional solution chemistry and have thus far been employed for the synthesis of a large variety of compounds along with transition-metal catalysed C–H bond functionalization. Herein, we demonstrate the solid-state synthesis of azobenzene ligand and its dicyclopalladated complex via C-H bond activation by palladium(II) acetate, Pd(OAc)2, applying different mechanochemical methods. The direct insight into the reaction dynamics and formation mechanism of dicyclopalladated complex in the solid state have been studied by in situ and ex situ monitoring using Raman and NMR spectroscopies, respectively.
