Research of family resilience: high school students and their parents perspective

In the year 2015, Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences University of Zagreb, Croatia, carried out the project “Research of Family Resilience”. The aims of the project were to determine ways of family resilience assessment and explore contribution of the family resilience to developmental outcomes of young people. Participants were 1st grade students (N=304) from two high schools and their parents (N=221). In the research three questionnaires were used: (1) Family Resilience Assessment Scale (Sixbey, 2005) to assess the family protective factors, (2) Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (Goodman, 2005) to assess youth outcomes and (3) Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale (1967) to assess risk. Main results showed that families who participated in the study assessed a low exposure to stressful events. In addition, the transition from primary to secondary school was assessed low by youth. Protective factors in the family were highly assessed in all dimensions (family communication and problem solving, utilizing social and economic resources ; maintaining the positive outlook, family connectedness, ability to make meaning of adversity), except in the dimension of family spirituality. In general, presence of emotional and behavioral problems in young people were low. Based on the theoretical concepts and results of this research, family resilience operationalization will be discussed as well as recommendation for future research. Key words: family resilience, operationalization challenges
