Photoelimination of nitrogen from polycyclic diazirines in inclusion complexes

Reaction selectivity of highly reactive intermediates can be controlled when they are generated within host molecules. Photochemical reactions that generate carbenes provide the possibility to synthesize highly strained molecules, difficult to obtain otherwise. Binding of polycyclic diazirines to β- and γ-cyclodextrins and cucurbit[n]urils and their photoreactivity was studied. The results have shown different distribution of photoproducts when photochemistry was carried out in solution and in the inclusion complexes.
